500 WORDS and other news

Published on Tuesday 12th March 2013 by DJ Kirkby

I was delighted to find out last week that I had been chosen as one of the shortlisting judges for 500 WORDS.  For my overseas readers who may not have heard of  500 WORDS before it is a writing competition for children first launched by BBC Radio 2  in association with Hay Fever which is the children’s programme for the Hay Festival.

I am also working on a short term  Flights of Fancy creative writing project with Year 4 students, Portsmouth Museums and the artist Eileen White. I am hoping that I will be able to share a couple of those stories with you on here once the project has finished, and for those of you who are lucky enough to live within travelling distance, you will be able to see the whole project on display in Cumberland Museum from May.

The artist Carol Burns and I have been doing some  collaborative working.  We work really well together and I am pleased to say that our second piece is nearly finished, and we will be sharing one of our projects with you next month.  We are working on building a complete portfolio so there will be lots more to share with you over the course of this year!

My latest book Special Deliveries: Life Changing Moments has been published as an e-book with the paperback due out in November.  Special Deliveries is available from all online stores worldwide and I am looking forward to hearing what you thought of it. I had great fun making a book trailer video for it which you can watch on YouTube and Vimeo.

The book bundles from my time as writer in residence for Portsmouth libraries have been printed (they look fabulous!) and there will be three launch parties on the 13th April to celebrate the creative minds of the residents of Portsmouth. The first party will be at 10.30 at Cosham, the second will be at Fratton library at 2pm and the third will be at Southsea library at 7pm. I will post more details about this soon.

I am also working on a top secret project which has to be completed by the end of the month and my mysterious Project X is still firmly under a non disclosure agreement but I hope that will be lifted in the next couple of months so that I can finally tell you all about it!

So, that is why I haven’t been visiting blogs lately.  I miss you all!  What have you all been up to?

  • Wow you have been busy, I look forward to seeing all these projects over the coming months, shame I can’t get to Portsmouth. All your hard work is bearing fruit.

    • Sheepish, I wish you could get to Portsmouth. There is so much happening here from a literary perspective. Was offered another project yesterday which I am super excited about because it is so innovative. Wish writing was always like this but bookings are as unpredictable as busses.
