“Doing” a Doctorate – week 21
While I am supposed to be working on my second assignment – Methods and Methodologies – I have instead done more baking than usual this week. It is seriously the best METHOD of procrastination ever – haha, see what I did there? I wonder if I could change my EdD to researching something to do with cake baking? Does eating cake (a.k.a. ‘caking’) help students learn better? Does ‘caking’ improve patient safety and care by proxy? Could I submit a cake equivalent to the word limit of each assignment? The latter is a question I now MUST ask of the EdD Programme Lead. After all, what’s the worst that can happen? That was a rhetorical question by the way! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to spend out children’s inheritance on baking ingredients. Or, to work on my next doctoral assignment. Because, same thing (in my dreams).
Ahem, so anyway back to reality…. this week I have baked: 1) a vegan and gluten free citrus cake with orange curd and frosting sandwiched in the layers for a friend’s birthday, 2) created a recipe for a Spring Thyme cake which I entered in the vegan and gluten free bake off won 1st place, and 3) I baked my darling husband the strawberry cake he specially requested for his birthday which turned out to be a very tasty pile of mess. Baking is fickle like that.

Publishable doctorate words written – Errrr, still waiting to hear back from NET about the article I submitted. I’ve checked and it is still ‘under review’.
Doctorate assignment words written – 795 (of 5000) on assignment no 2 (Yes, I know….but it’s a bank holiday today and I am on annual leave next week so I actually have time to write so next week my word count will be much improved)
Cups of tea drunk – eleventymillion, now with added cups of coffee. And caffeine is gooooooood….
Miles run – 3.2 (too much work and no time for exercise)
Miles swam – ZERO (see above)
Miles cycled – ZERO (see running)
Cakes baked – Citrus curd cake, Spring Thyme cake, Strawberry sponge photos at bottom of post See my recipe section for various recipes.
Crafting done – still working on knitting some very basic (because eyesight is rubbish now) squares for a charity blanket
Books read for pleasure – Whistle in the dark (see 2018 reading page for link to book reviews)
Books read for doctorate – None, but if you’ve been following this then you will be aware that I did a LOT of reading when I first started preparing for this assignment. So all the knowledge is in my mind.. all that’s left to do is churn it into a passable assignment with appropriate references.
Movies watched for doctorate – none, honestly how boring am I? Someone suggest a suitable movie please – AI, Sims, dystopian, anything like that.
Articles read for doctorate – None (see ‘books read’ explanation above)
Blogs read for doctorate – Writing and wellbeing
Research undertaken – Second batch of research with new UK cohort has begin but I am concerned because it’s a small cohort this time – just 8, compared to 44 last time. I am also struggling to recruit anyone from the Australian Uni (I tell myself this will make for excellent writing fodder later on but at the moment is simply an unwelcome frustration).
Meetings with doctorate supervisors – none (not in a place where I have anything to show)
Meetings with ALN / LD support – I have made contact with the LDs and hopefully an appointment will be forthcoming soon
Average level of guilt felt when trying to squeeze doctorate days in work diary – on (writing) holiday lalalalala
Overall average stress level – very low now
Average success rate – Minimal
Plan for next week:
- Try to resolve Aus recruitment problem
- Identify another overseas Uni to recruit from
- Book tutorial with unit lead
- Wait for eye op appointment to arrive (have pre-op date but no op date yet? WEIRD)
- Wait for husband’s referral date to new specialist to find out extent of damage caused by illness number two (he’s received a letter informing him there are currently NO appointments!)
- Find more excuses to bake cake
- Play with grandson as much as possible
- Read more for fun
- Allow myself to get distracted by all things shiny and appreciate that for the future creativity and benefit it may add to my doctorate
