Dear Doctorate – Year two, week 36
Dear Doctorate Diary,
I’ve completed and submitted assignment five on time which I am so happy about as I had a month after eye surgery where I wasn’t able to work on it. I could have had an extension but that would have delayed me starting on my next assignment.
I can now begin writing my transfer doc which has to be 10,000 words and is due on July 1st.
Progress on writing content and developing the first of three safeguarding Virtual Reality Learning Environments is going well. Daden Ltd. are building the VRLE and the first one is nearly ready for proofing. The avatars, inside of the environment and functionality are exactly as I detailed for them which is so exciting. Our students are going to have a fantastic learning experience to hep them develop their safeguarding skills. I have started an Instagram account for my CILVRS Project so if you want to find out more follow @CILVRS.
I entered myself in a triathlon in June, because having an event to participate in makes me try harder to finish work before dark so I can go out and exercise…and I do need exercise to help balance out the work induced crazy.
The NoObesity apps – the ones that I wrote the content for well over a year ago now – have now been released for free download in IOS and Android. I’ve attached some photos at the end that explain a bit more but in short it is hoped the apps will change attitudes among the wider public on the importance of a healthy weight and lifestyle and also change attitudes of health and care workers who support clients with behaviour changes related to weight and lifestyle.

Publishable doctorate words written –Virtual health education: scaling practice to transform student learning article has been made available online by Nurse Education Today – click here for more info. Future Technologies Conference 2018 article NoObesity Apps – from approach to finished app has been published. I’ve finished the draft of the second CILVRS article and need to choose a journal for submission so I can rework it to suit their criteria.
Doctorate assignment words written – Assignment five which is about undertaking and analysis of my pilot research is complete and submitted. Now it’s time to begin writing my 10,000 word transfer doc, scary.
Cups of tea drunk – Lost count, tea is so perfect, more tea please.
Miles run – Just five miles this week. Not as many as I would have liked…because, work.
Kilometres swam -Zero because, work.
Cakes baked – Check out my Instagram page or my recipe page for bakes. My new fave thing to do is make iced cookies!
Crafting done- none as it is getting too warm to knit or crochet in the evenings. However, youngest’s kegs are now so long that we can’t buy trousers in conventional stores and stores for tall men are very expensive so I am going to try and make him trousers.
Books read for pleasure – Less than I would like but work and study make me too tired to do more than a few minutes reading before I fall asleep at night (see 2019 reading page for link to book reviews)
Books read for doctorate – None this week
Movies / videos watched for doctorate – None this week
Articles read for doctorate – None this week
Blogs read for doctorate – Embodied Intelligence,
Research undertaken –
Meetings with doctorate supervisors – none this week.
Meetings with ALN / LD support – Assignment support dates and tutorials agreed for rest of year.
Average level of guilt felt when trying to squeeze doctorate days in work diary – Ridiculously high. I’ve managed to schedule a few but they get used up by dealing with unexpected work related issues so I’ve mostly stopped trying to do doctorate work during work and am using my holiday allowance instead.
Overall average stress level – tolerably high
Average success rate – acceptable
Plan for next week:
- Try not to get too stressed at work as it has been making me feel really ill this week
- Try to relax
- Draft outline for transfer doc
- Train for June triathlon
