Dear Doctorate – year 2 week 42
Dear Doctorate Diary,
Assignment 5 is being marked and I am working on the draft of my transfer report.
I may still be clinging on just by the strength of my fingernails, but I glad I have reached this milestone without falling off.
I have to undergo a mock viva this week and am dreading it, because I seem to have forgot everything I have written over the past 18 months. I know from our EdD chat group that this feeling is mutual, which is a comfort. However, it’s a comfort that I wont likely remember when I am drowning in front of the mock viva mock supervisors.
I have written additional thousands of words trying to write answers to possible questions I might be asked on Friday, now I just need to remember them when asked to demonstrate my suitability for the real transfer viva in September. I have also ordered two books: Fail Your Viva and The Viva Prep Handbook which wont get here in time for my mock viva but will be useful during prep for the real event in September.

Doctorate assignment words written – circa 6000 of draft transfer doc
Cups of tea drunk – Lost count, tea is so perfect, more tea please.
Miles run – Averaging five miles per week. Not as many as I would have liked…because, work.
Kilometres swam -Zero because, work.
Miles kayaked – Average 1 mile per week (occasionally including several frustrating metres stuck on mud banks, which make it feel double the total distance).
Miles cycled – Averaging 16 slow miles per week
Cakes baked – Check out my Instagram page or my recipe page for bakes.
Crafting done- none as it is getting too warm to knit or crochet in the evenings. However, youngest’s legs are now so long that we can’t buy trousers in conventional stores and stores for tall men are very expensive so I am going to try and make him trousers. I have cut out the pattern and now just have to find the time to sew the trousers.
Books read for pleasure – Less than I would like but work and study make me too tired to do more than a few minutes reading before I fall asleep at night (see 2019 reading page for link to book reviews)
Books read for doctorate – I’ve ordered some books on how to perform well during a viva
Movies / videos watched for doctorate – Currently watching the Dark Matter series, one episode per day.

Blogs read for doctorate – Viva Survivors,

Average level of guilt felt when trying to squeeze doctorate days in work diary – moderate
Overall average stress level – tolerably high
Average success rate – acceptable
Plan for next week:
- Try not to get too stressed at work as it has been making me feel really ill this week
- Try to relax
