“Doing” a Doctorate – week 17

Published on Friday 2nd March 2018 by DJ Kirkby

Big shout out to all those working in healthcare and emergency services who have had to sleep at work in order to keep services going – you are all superheroes! Well, other than that thank you anything sensible and scholarly that I was going to say (Me? Hahaha, as if!) has flown away on a flurry of snowflakes. Yes, we’ve actually got snow on the south coast of England. First time in about 7 years that we’ve had enough snow to actually settle on the ground for more than a few minutes, and it’s enough to close schools, services and businesses (anything more than a few settled centimetres does that).

Week 17: read week 16 by clicking here
Publishable doctorate words written –  Nothing new written and waiting to hear from editor about first CILVRS project article I submitted
Doctorate assignment words written – doing a lot of reading about methods and methodologies in an attempt to be able to write my second assignment
Cups of tea drunk – eleventymillion (still with plant based milk – I have decided to stay vegan because trying it out for Veganuary proved to be the easiest lifestyle change I’ve ever made).
Miles run – 3 only, AGAIN! ITB still giving me grief post run….and now snowmageddon is upon us, stopping me from partaking in parkrun tomorrow.
Cakes baked –  Turmeric Truffles, Toffee Donuts (baked, not fried)  See my recipe section for various recipes.
Crafting done – none, because eyesight is rubbish now
Books read for pleasureThe Silent Corner, Mine  (see 2018 reading page for link to book reviews)
Books read for doctorate – Principles and Practice of Research in Midwifery, Research Methodology – a step-by-step guide for beginners, Qualitative Research For Nurses (I will get my brain round this, I WILL!!!)
Movies watched for doctorate – None
Articles read for doctorate
Blogs read for doctorate –
Research undertaken – Will begin second batch of research with new cohort in England and Australia in March 2018 – need to write new survey questions for these cohorts because my research is no longer just a ‘pilot’
Meetings with doctorate supervisors – none (not in a place where I have anything to show)
Meetings with ALN / LD support – none, seem to have fallen off their radar…must try and get back in it.
Average level of guilt felt when trying to squeeze doctorate days in work diary – Impossible to fit any doctorate days in this week because my diary is crammed full and my average work day has been 11 hours long for the past few weeks
Overall average stress level – High
Average success rate – zilch (this week)

Plan for next week:

  • Bake more
  • Run more
  • Cuddle new grandson as much as possible
  • Read more for fun
  • Chase eye surgery appointment
  • Allow myself to get distracted by all things shiny and appreciate that for the future creativity and benefit it may add to my doctorate

Our beautiful tropical trees are wearing an unusual accessory today.
